Strolling down to the Salt House early one Sunday morning, I encountered some strange glares as I stripped down to my jocks daring to bare it all for a great cause.
The very first Cairns Cupid Undie Run had over 115 participants ready to run the 1.5km in their bedroom best to raise awareness for Neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that causes tumours to form a nerve cell anywhere in the body including the brain and spine.
Local mum and event organiser Diana Hepworth had a heart-warming story to tell, she shared the reason she brought the Cupid Undie Run to Cairns. Her little boy was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis on his first birthday. Diana told me when she had found out about this fun run she just fell in love with the concept. Neurofibromatosis can cause physically deforming growths on the skin which sadly, often lead to people staring. “The undie run is all about making people feeling comfortable in their own skin, and making people aware it is also okay to be different”.
With the support of the local community, Cairns raised over $12,000 for the Children’s Tumor Foundation. Diana states that next year it is going to be bigger and better then ever, so get ready!
