The familiar and potent smell of hair spray hit me like a high five as I entered the Crosswell Hall at Cairns State High School for Turning Pointe Dance Studio’s ‘Purple Pizzazz’ end of year Christmas concert.
As much as I loved each and every performance including by the schools first all boy’s dance crew it was hard to go past the ‘Rubber Duckie’ dance with toddlers as young as 3 taking to the stage. One little ballerina took a while to warm up as she stood with her arms crossed and a cute little pout. She could not resist joining in the fun when she saw the reassuring smiles from proud family and friends in the audience.
Melanie Connor (Director) said some of her students have been with her from 3 to 17 years of age “I feel like a proud mother, we have been through ups and downs together. Dance teaches the students so many transferrable life skills such as personal presentation, making friendships, teamwork and most importantly confidence, which is so important”.
Excited squeals rang out through the hall as Santa himself showed up with very large sack full of presents for the dancers who of course have been very, very nice.
