There was not a worry in the world on my mind about being on time to the Red Beret Cairns Cup Ladies Day. This year I was hitting the airways and taking off with the crew from Nautilus Aviation in their luxurious helicopter. I felt like a VIP star as I arrived straight in the middle of the Cairns Jockey Club racecourse in the six-seater red Ferarri of the sky with leather interior. I was a bit nervous earlier that day as the last time I took off in a helicopter was four years ago, when I told my family I wanted to be a mustering pilot. My Father soon shook that idea out of me when he put me on a wild ride with a chopper muster from the Cape. The team from Nautilus Aviation left me feeling a lot safer than my last joy trip.
As soon as we landed, fashionable fillies frolicked trackside. Winter fashion was calling and straight to the Nautilus Aviation High Tea I went. It featured a red carpet entry and a stage for the seasoned fashionistas, as well as some new faces to parade their outfits for Nautilus Aviation Fashion on the Field. Winter is my favourite time of the year for racing trends. It is a season where although it is slightly cooler than the usual heat of Far North Queensland, it can still be quite a sweaty, humid month.
So as us ladies pull on our thick stockings, closed-in shoes and warm winter dresses or jumpsuits (which are trending at the moment), we still have to keep that poise while losing a gallon of sweat underneath our thick layers and all in the name of fashion. A style trend tip for millinery this year was the wrapped-around turban headpieces. A bonus of this piece is not worrying about booking into a hairdresser, you can just tuck it up and away you go. Regular racegoer and Fashions on the Field classic winner, Chantelle Kenyon, says she has been attending the local races since she was 18 years old and it has taken her up to three months to put together her outfit. That’s commitment. I think it took me that long to decide on an outfit that was going to fit in my helicopter ride.
Over and out ground patrol.
